As we wait for various country lockdowns to open up, we all feel the need for a holiday more than ever before! So perhaps it’s time to start looking at what our options may be. What holiday destinations are going to be considered the safest to travel to, as we look to spread our wings beyond our own country borders, post Covid-19?
What destinations will make us feel safe enough for us to have a great holiday, while still being able to maintain some form of social distancing? Because we have to accept that Covid-19 is going to be around for a while still. We are also now more aware of the potential threat of new viruses, so perhaps we won’t feel quite as comfortable in crowded restaurants or resorts where everyone sits close enough to breath on us. No one wants to have a wonderful holiday only to fall ill on returning home.
Camping may be an option, but you’ll still have to use the same ablution facilities as other campers. And of course, some of us are just so over this do-it-yourself type holiday. Staying close to home, in your own country will have a huge appeal, if you can get the kind of holiday you crave.
Private and isolated
For those that are looking for a safe environment, where social distancing has always been part of the practice of the resorts to some degree, you can’t go wrong with a secluded Mozambique island or coastal resort.
Many of the top resorts in Mozambique have for years offered the kind of holiday where not only is the accommodation private, but dining and other excursions are also private and social-distancing friendly. Ideal for honeymooners, where your meals can be served at your villa, or on the beach, and private island excursions can be arranged.
The beaches in Mozambique are vast and mostly empty of tourists, and the water is warm all year round.
South of Maputo – swim with dolphins!
Just a few kilometres north of the Kosi Bay Border lies the beautiful White Pearl Resort, with 22 private Pool Villas overlooking a stunning stretch of sandy white beach. Here, your every need will be met with a private Host / butler at your beck and call. Private meals either in your villa, or set up in various locations of the resort ensure privacy and a totally safe and socially distant environment. For those that want to cross off a bucket list item, White Pearl offers ocean safaris where you could be lucky enough to swim with wild dolphins!
If you’re up to a longer drive, through the beautiful, deserted Maputo Special Reserve, you can make your way to the totally isolated and pristine beach of Anvil Bay. You will need a 4×4 as this is deep within the reserve and a lot of the route is in deep, soft sand. There’s a good chance to encounter Elephants as well as many other animals during your drive. Anvil Bay has just 10 Casinhas, nestled in the dune forest on wooden decks, each with its own stretch of beachfront. The paths and main areas are soft beach sand, so the legs get a good workout here.
Other options include a drive, or flight to Maputo city, with a boat transfer from the harbour to Machangulo Beach Lodge, where you will stay in gorgeous chalets with stunning panoramic sea-views. Located at the channel between Inhaca Island and the dunes of the Santa Maria Peninsula, hidden away amid the dunes and the forests, Machangulo Beach Lodge is the ideal setting for your family getaway, honeymoon, fishing trip, diving adventure or just a weekend away from it all. The dining room offers space to spread out so you will feel quite safely distanced from other guests.
Approximately 600km north of Maputo lies the secluded Massinga Beach, well off the main roads. It is a bit of a drive, but with good road conditions until the turn-off to the Lodge. For this last stretch one would require a 4×4, although Massinga Beach will be happy to arrange collection from the town of Massinga for those who don’t have a 4×4. Now that Airlink have re-introduced their flights, it is possible to fly to Vilanculos and then take a 3 hour road transfer to the lodge.
Each of the Ocean Front rooms at Massinga Beach has wonderful 180 degree sea views and a lovely large sundeck and private plunge pool. We have some awesome “pay now, travel later” deals at Massinga Beach with awesome discounts and flexible dates!
Vilanculos is a fair distance to drive to from South Africa, but it is doable. Or direct flights can be arranged on Airlink. From here there are numerous options on the mainland for private, socially distant friendly options, or of course, a quick hop across to one of the beautiful Bazaruto Islands.
Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa has 44 luxury Villas and offers world class diving, sailing, snorkelling and deep-sea fishing. Horse riding, tennis, dune boarding and island excursions are also offered. The beautiful and unique Santa Carolina – also known as Paradise Island is close to Bazaruto Island, and private day visits can be arranged. The old Paradise Island Hotel is crumbling into the sea, but the beaches and ocean are pristine and unspoilt. If you’re in the area, this is a must-do day trip!
Peri-peri Beach Club
Azura Benguerra offers the stunning Presidential Villa or Villa Amizade for exclusive use for honeymooners, families or small groups of friends. Or stay in one of the Beach Pool Villas offering a range of dining options, and activities including the newly opened Peri-Peri Beach Club. Guests can spend their day lounging at the beach bar or pool, enjoying their favourite Mozambican cuisine, magnums of French Rosé wine, or creating their own cocktails through the specially designed mixology menu. The new beach club and bar incorporates a range of activities including an ocean facing swimming pool, personal grills where guests can sizzle their own seafood and on selected nights an open-air cinema! The beach club also has a Spa pavilion for African-themed massages. All these locales will be quite socially distant friendly, with lots of space to spread out.
Also on Benguerra Island is the ever popular &Beyond Benguerra Lodge, which lies sheltered within the canopy of an indigenous forest and swaying palm trees. Cabanas and Casinhas all offer private timber decks, rim-flow pools, sun loungers and private salas with irresistible hanging daybeds. Private host / butlers are on hand to serve your meals in varied and private locations.
Deserted Island getaways!
Let’s face it, you can’t get much more isolated than on a deserted island! And Mozambique has this to offer. In the Quirimbas Archipelago lies the tiny deserted island of Medjumbe, which is just 1 km long and around 500 metres wide. This resort is due to open at the beginning of December 2020. There are just 12 private pool Villas and no one else except you and the staff, and maybe a few other guests. Social distancing has never been easier! Private dinners on the beach in front of your villa, or on the deserted Quissanga Island. You could even spend the night completely alone under the stars on Quissanga Island with a radio to keep you in touch with the staff on Medjumbe.
Want to benefit from some massive discounts? Mozambique Islands have negotiated with some resorts, and we can offer some fantastic deals! Call 083 299 4321, or email: firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or quotes.
