The Utopian Benguerra Lodge
Lying off the coast of Vilanculos is the peaceful little island of Benguerra. It is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago; the entire area of which spans no more than 55km². Home to only 14 chalets, the Benguerra Lodge inhabits a small area on the north western coastline. Far away from the hum drum of ‘real life’, this island encapsulates the dreamy imagery usually seen only in movies.
Leaving ample room for the indigenous forest to all but swallow this little nest, the island remains as intended – a pristine national park. Rather than rubbing shoulders with the who’s who, you’ll be listening out for the hoot-hoot of the Pel’s Fishing Owl.
The diverse landscape is comprised of wetlands, freshwater lakes, forest and even savannah. Benguerra Island is home to more than 140 different bird species, while the surrounding coral reefs protect all manner of marine life. Whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, dugongs, turtles and even marlin further off the coast inhabit the turquoise marine reserve.
For the active or lethargic family there are appropriate pastimes such as dhow cruises, horse riding, scuba diving, island drives, fly-fishing, snorkelling and even deep sea fishing. The pristine white sand beaches lend themselves to the contemplation of one’s life choices in so much as; ‘I never want to leave’.
In true tropical island poise, the restaurant provides a relaxed environment for guests to explore their appetites for the local cuisine. Serving only the freshest of ingredients, the restaurant has on offer a cornucopia of fish, crab and calamari prepared using celebrated Mozambican-Portuguese methods.
The spice-trade inspired chalets embody the leisurely charm of a rustic resort, without losing its luxurious attention to detail and enigmatic atmosphere. Equipped with all of the essentials such as the queen size bed, romantically draped mosquito nets and ceiling fans; each of the chalets are additionally accompanied by a private plunge pool, sun deck and jaw dropping sea view.
