Overview Of Resort

NOTE: Matemo Island Resort is currently CLOSED for renovations & structural improvements. Opening date to be advised.

Please contact us for accommodation on neighbouring islands, like the stunningly beautiful Medjumbe Private Island!

The magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago in Cabo Delgado Province, Northern Mozambique, is a captivating chain of 32 islands. These idyllic islands stretch from the quaint city of Pemba in the south to the town of Palma in the north. The Quirimbas National Park includes a vast expanse of enchanted forest and some of the charming islands in the south of the Archipelago. The park was established in 2002 as an answer to the local community’s need to nurture and sustain their precious natural environment. The Quirimbas have enormous cultural and historical value, with a combination of Arabian, Portuguese and African influences.

The impressive 1 500 square km marine area of Quirimbas National Park includes 11 coral islands stretching for 100km.

Matemo Island Resort is situated in the heart of the Quirimbas. The focus of this luxury resort is on leisure, fishing and diving. You can even take a “Water taxi” to the nearby Ibo Island for a fascinating, cultural experience.

The Resort has 24 thatched chalets, right on the beach, with versatile sleeping facilities with either two twin beds or queen size beds. There are also a few interleading chalets ideal for families with young children. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom with designer bath & indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, satellite TV and the convenience of mini-bars and tea/coffee making facilities.  Chalets are set separately from the main building where you’ll dine on sublime local seafood fare, relax at the pool and enjoy sumptuous cocktails at the bar.

Treat yourself to an underwater wonderland with captivating diving and snorkelling where you can experience some of the world’s richest coral reefs. The Quirimbas Islands feature phenomenal vertical drop-offs some up to 400 meters. These walls are abundant with coral covered caves and tropical fish ranging from Gobies to mammoth Napoleon Wrasse and game fish including Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel.

Matemo Island is accessed from Pemba by light aircraft transfer – 25 min flight.

Testimonials / feedback from guests

“What an amazing place! Thanks so much for organising our paradise trip away. We were totally stressed up until Wednesday in Pemba – still working throughout the travel.
For some fortuitous reason our laptop refused to connect to the internet and we had no choice but to switch off – we eventually did and boy was it great!

Absolutely fantastic, relaxing and great.
Thank you. Now back to my work……

“Matemo Island was amazing. It is the quietest place I have ever been, but in a very good way. The accommodation was lovely. Food great. Drinks choices very, very good. Trips well organised and good. We had a really relaxing week, and it delivered everything we wanted it to be. I wish I were there right now!!!

I would highly recommend the holiday to anyone. It’s super peaceful and relaxing. We were very strict on our luggage weight, but they didn’t seem to be for some reason. I would recommend you telling people to take i-pods and books, and there is literally nothing there at all. They had a small library but not many books in English. There was a pc for free use to get in touch with people if needed, which is worth a mention too. Definitely tell people to take a torch as the walk to the room at night is not well lit and the crabs are everywhere at night, some very large, so you really have to watch where you are walking.

Just great. Thanks so much for organising. It was everything we wanted and needed after such a tough year!!!
With kindest regards,”

“Just some feedback on the trip we’ve just had for any clients of yours that may be interested in future:
1. Matemo Island is absolutely stunning – paradise really!!!
2. The diving is good, although the staff did say that the diving is better on Medjumbe Island. I thought it was fantastic. We did 6 dives, and weren’t disappointed on any of them.

The dive set-up is also very professional and the equipment is top quality and relatively new.

Thanks for all your assistance through this, and for booking the trip, I did have a great time while I was there and would recommend it as a destination for your clients.

“Thank you for all your help arranging the details for our honeymoon.
Matemo Island really was a dream honeymoon destination and we certainly were looked after very well by Tony the General Manager and the rest of his team. They really went the extra mile, and one our highlights was when one of the team arranged for Graham to play football in the game between two of the villages on the island! The villagers really welcomed us and Graham loved it.

The setting really was beautiful and we particularly enjoyed how they moved dinner around the resort each evening so that we could enjoy a different setting each night, the crowning glory was the amazing special private dinner we had outside our bedroom in a Bedouin theme under the stars!

The food was very good (I love seafood!) – the only negative comment we could make (possible for the whole resort) was that every meal (lunch and dinner) included only hot main course dishes. Being such a hot climate it would have been nice to have a nice salad etc., especially for lunch.

Overall we certainly would recommend Matemo to others and we have even discussed going back (perhaps for one of our anniversaries)
Once again thanks for you help
Kind Regards”
Jessica & Graham (travelled March 2009)
